Task Force Phoenix has a unique mission to train and mentor the Afghan National Army (ANA). The ANA is an all- volunteer army much like the military forces in the United States. The ANA is ethnically balanced at all levels and provides a truly representative force for the people of Afghanistan.
A large part of our force is made up of Army National Guard Soldiers from 49 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Washington D.C. The mission of TF Phoenix is perfectly suited for the National Guard. Guard Soldiers have extensive experience in training in a wide variety of environments. The experience, training and personnel the National Guard brings allow our Task Force to interface with the ANA and civilian community on a professional and personal basis, thus building a lasting relationship built on a foundation of trust and respect.
TF Phoenix not only draws from the experience of the National Guard, we are also using the talents of service members from all services and coalition partners to improve all aspects of manning, equipping, training, deploying, maintaining and fighting an Army. Each branch of service, Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, bring with them a unique skill-set that enhances the ability of TF Phoenix to accomplish our mission.
In addition to the US Forces, TF Phoenix consists of 13 other Coalition Partners to include, France, Germany, Romania, Great Britain, Netherlands, Canada, Croatia, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Slovenia, Poland, and Mongolia. The Coalition Partners are committed to the mission of training and mentoring the ANA. We will continue to do our mission with the ANA as long as it takes to develop their capability and capacity to fight terror within their borders.
The Task Force consists of 13 Coalition Partner Nations. All of these countries come together to train and mentor Afghanistan’s all volunteer Army. Coalition Forces have successfully assisted in training and equipping nearly 35,000 Afghanistan National Army (ANA) Soldiers. These ANA Soldiers are currently operating in 104 locations throughout Afghanistan.
The following coalition partners provide Operational Mentor Liaison Teams (OMLT’s): France, Germany, Romania, Great Britain, Netherlands, Canada, Croatia, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Slovenia, Poland.
OMLTs are equivalent to the US Embedded Training Team (ETT’s).
The ETT’s and OMLT’s mentor the ANA in leadership, staff, and support functions, planning, assessing, supporting, and execution of operations and training doctrine, tactics, techniques, and procedures. In addition to training and mentoring the ANA the ETT’s and OMLT’s provide the ANA access to combat enablers such as close air support/fires, medical evacuation, and quick reaction forces.
